CB Show #9 – How to Interview Podcast Guests with Zack Attack from Movie Buzz[ed]

Chris explains how to interview podcast guests with fellow podcaster Zack Attack from the Movie Buzz[ed] podcast. Chris and Zack discuss what makes a good podcast, whether or not it is a good idea to interview your personal friends on your podcast and even specifically what you DO NOT want your podcast guests do once they get on your podcast.
Chris and Mr. Zack Attack explore one guest in particular named Joel from CbShow #8 who wanted to come on the show and tell his “Cancer Faker” story. But Joel has more of a freeform, non-linear storytelling technique, and some of the details of the story became lost in translation from Joel’s brain out onto the show.
Joel and the "Cancer Faker" Story
Joel and the “Cancer Faker” story from CbShow #8
The “Cancer Faker” story is a true story about a comedian named Joel and his attempt to help a friend who had cancer. In short, Joel married a lady who was diagnosed with cancer just so she could use his employer’s free family airline benefits and fly to Europe so she could get a special treatment for her cancer. The girl even put up a charity website to help raise money for her cancer treatments, and collected thousands of dollars in donations from people across the world. But then come to find out, the lady never had cancer to begin with. She was lying the whole time. And that’s the “Cancer Faker” story, in a nutshell.
Chris and Mr. Attack discuss what could have been done to make the “Cancer Faker” story more entertaining for YOU to listen to, and then Chris invites YOU to send your ideas on how to be a better storyteller to Joel on Twitter @igotvdwheniwas3 or send them to the CbShow Twitter @chrisbrakeshowand we will forward it to him.
Zack and Chris also discuss what goes into prepping a guest for an interview or an appearance on the CbShow, and whether or not it’s a good idea to pre-interview a guest before having them on your podcast. Chris Brake’s main advice to guests who are going to be on a podcast is to just be yourself. Zack Attack advises new guests to remember that comedy podcasts especially are designed to make people laugh, so don’t get offended if the host wants to rip into you a little bit.
Chris and Zack also explore marijuana use and whether or not it’s a good idea for your guest to get totally stoned to the bone right before being interviewed on your show. Chris even gives a heart-warming PSA illustrating the negative consequences of substance abuse.
Zack talks about his own podcast show and explains the format of the Movie Buzz[ed] podcast vs. the common misconception that Movie Buzz[ed] is a spin-off of Mystery Science Theater 3,000 (or MST3K if you’re nasty).
Chris gives a nod to RiffTrax, the MP3 commentary tracks by Mike and the other MST3K stars that you download and play back in sync with your favorite movies and TV shows. Zack says that Movie Buzz[ed] is similar to MST3K and RiffTrax, but not really the same thing at all. You can hear the Movie Buzz[ed]podcast with Zack and Caleb, coming soon to PodOmatic.
.
And if you like what Chris says about RiffTrax go download a RiffTrax MP3, sync it up with a DVD at home and suddenly films like “Inception,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars,” “Lord of the Rings” and“Transformers” just got a whole lot funnier.
This episode also includes a new “Ask Dale J.” segment. Today Dale tells you how it makes him feel to become Uncle Dale, as his sister has just given birth to a new human being. Dale performs animprov Americana blues folk poetry song and explains why he doesn’t like to see pictures of other people’s children.

CB Show #8 - The Cancer Faker, The Four Agreements and The Idiots

In this episode you will hear a man named Joel tell a story about trying to help a friend with cancer that totally backfired right into his own face, Bryan the Producer talk about the Four Agreements and how they can change your life and a unique look at the Lars Von Trier film “The Idiots” with our friend Adam Ricky.
Go here to listen to the episode online:

Or go here to download the MP3:

Or go here to subscribe to the Chris Brake Show on iTunes:

Chris opens the show apologizing for the infamous “Prom Faker” story, a story about how he used the Internet to assume the identity of a super-hunk named Drew P., and acting as this person Chris asked a girl to a big high school dance. The girl was excited that Drew P. would ask her to the big high school dance and immediately agreed. But little did she know it was not Drew P., but it was Chris Brake, indeed! What an awful thing to do, right? Chris feels awfully bad about this, and we all ask your forgiveness!
The Idiots by Lars Von Trier
“Take a long ride on the short bus.”
Sarah also confesses an equally-brutal story that she, too, feels bad about: Sarah used to take Super Soaker water pistols with her to high school, and  at the end of the day Sarah and her friends would drive by all the students who were walking home and blast the crap out of them with these high-powered H20 guns. What an awful thing to do, right? Sarah feels awfully bad about this, and we all ask your forgiveness!
Sarah’s high school hi-jinx continue with “Pads on the Bus Go Bleed, Bleed Bleed,” a story about how her friends and her used to take women’s sanitary napkins (or “pads” if you’re nasty), fill them with red ink and slap them on the side of the school bus while they were driving to and from school. Sorry, Otto the bus driver! You’ve got to admit, that’s pretty funny though, right?
Chris follows that up with “Howser the Schnauzer’s Foreskin Prank,” a story about a guy named Howser the Schnauzer who used to pull his foreskin through the zipper of his pants and pretend it was just some weird goo. What an awful thing to do, right? Ouch! Chris feels awfully good that he didn’t fall for it or attempt to touch it.
Joel comes on the line to tell his incredible story about trying to help a female friend with cancer, now known worldwide as the “Cancer Faker” story. Joel worked for an airline and his friend coaxed Joel into marrying her just so she could use his free flight benefits to fly to Europe for cancer treatments. She even set up a website and raked in thousands of dollars in donations from people to help pay for her cancer treatments. But did she ever even have cancer to begin with?
Then we check in with Bryan the Producer down in Florida who tells us about the Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ángel Ruiz. In essence, the Four Agreements are:
1) Be impeccable with your word
2) Don’t take anything personally
3) Don’t make assumptions
4) Always do your best
Bryan has used these thing in his own life and says they really do work. Bryan has used the Four Agreements to lose weight and maintain a positive and healthy outlook on life. To quote Bryan himself, “If you want to stop worrying, start living and feel like you are on a moderate dose of cocaine, read the Four Agreements!” Click the picture below to check out the Four Agreements on Amazon.

Then Adam Ricky helps Chris recall their historic discovery of the Lars Von Trier film The Idiots.” Chris and Adam stumbled upon this film on VHS in the Chicagoland Darien Library, and then went on to use the film as a social experiment that went so far as inserting their own footage into the film and then viewing it with their friends and family, each time insisting it was the first time any of them had seen the film.
Chris then buries a golden nugget deep within this week’s podcast, an announcement that will no doubt shock the world. Chris has secretly been training for over two years for this particular event, and we will speak more about it in the future. Listen to this week’s episode for more secret information! It’s so secret, I cannot write about it here.
Rest In Peace, Abby Morgan
Abby Morgan from Dawson’s Creek boozing it up, drowning.
And in another stellar “5 Minutes in Capeside” segment, Sarah recalls a specific Dawson’s Creek episode that she saw over at her friend Debbie’s house long ago when they were making a volcano for Science class. Chris confirms that this was Dawson’s Creek, Season 2, Episode 19: “Abby Morgan, Rest in Piece,” an episode where underage drinker Abby Morgan (played by Monica Keena) gets all boozed up and then drowns in the Creek.
And this week’s episode closes out with “Ask Dale J.” where Chris asks the famous Egyptian magician from Trenton, NJ what happened today. This week Dale tells us about the struggles of performing at open mic events, dealing with people who live in bubbles and who enjoy hearing the same Dave Matthews Band and 4-Non Blondes songs over and over and an encounter Dale had today with an extremely rude girl.
This episode features the songs “Lowballer” by Spacewaster and “U.S.A.” by Dale J. Gordon!
CBS Quote of the week: “My mom is a Scorpio,” says Sarah. “Scorpios have the wildest sex. What’s that make you think about your mom?” asks Chris.

Next up on this week’s episode is Maya Maloff singing her original songs “Yellow Bedwetter” and “How Diddily-Doodiling Along,” as well as a cover of Lana Del Rey‘s song “Born to Die.” Maya also explains that “Yellow Bedwetter” is about her friend Mookie’s dog named Yellow who would pee all over the floor, and that “How Diddily-Doodiling Along” is about something she said to her friend Mookie while eating some fresh garden mushrooms. Sounds tasty! You can talk to Maya on Twitter @MayaMorrison
Chris tells a story about a wedding he went to over the weekend where he pulled out a megaphone and recited an entire speech from the film Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino. Then it’s time for Movie Talk, and this week we’re discussing the film Sleeping Beauty.
Image
Sarah’s friend Hermes from New York sits in with us to discuss this film, directed by Julia Leigh and starring Emily Browning and Rachael Blake. This movie is about a girl who takes a job where she is put into a comatose sleep-state and while she’s sleeping a guy will come in and sleep with her. There’s no sexual penetration at all allowed, however, and this movie is really weird. John asks Sarah to explain where the labia is on the female body, and Sarah pulls through with flying colors.
Chris feels like Sarah was really negative with all her comments about last week’s movie, Take This Waltz, and asks Sarah to explain why she was so hateful about Take This Waltz. Then all of a sudden Dr. Robert calls in to give his account of an event we mentioned last week where John cut off a lock of Sarah’s hair while her back was turned. Dr. Robert remembers this event with crystal clarity and recounts exactly what happened. It truly is a great story, one for the books!
Then Chris reads off a list of things that Sarah said during last week’s show to prove that it wasn’t just his imagination.
Then we have a really awkward conversation with Hermes from New York where Chris tells Hermes that he doesn’t like him, but he’s not quite sure why. A really interesting conversation unfolds about how other peoples’ opinions can infiltrate the subconscious mind and play tricks on your own psyche. John also asks Hermes about his feelings on bi-sexuality and anal sex. Big thanks to Hermes from New York for being so cool and answering all these bizarre questions. You rock, bruddah!
Spacewaster from Seattle, WA
Progressive Funk Metal band Spacewaster!
Then we play the song “Lowballer” by the Progressive Funk Metal band Spacewaster from Seattle, WA, and interview Meatpie from Spacewaster about living in Seattle and Spacewaster’s completely original and unique sound that rocks! Meatpie also gives a shout out to his buds in Alex’s Hand, now known as God Hates Fads, and tells a hilarious story about some kid on Craigslist who traded Meatpie a janktified bass guitar for Meatpie’s own authentic Fender Jazz bass, and how Meatpie rectified the situation by threatening to deal out a righteous beatdown if the kid didn’t give him back his Fender Jazz bass. Haha!
Spacewaster is now talking about doing a possible nationwide tour, so if you would like to have this awesome band come play in your town, contact them at facebook.com/spacewaster - and you can pick up their debut album at spacewaster.bandcamp.com!
And we close out this week’s episode with Ask Dale J, where Chris asks one question of Dale J. Gordon: “Dale, what happened today?” Today was Dale J. Gordon’s rent day, and he tells a moving spoken word piece about paying the rent, cooking food with his buddy Greg, eating some gnarly Trinidad Scorpion Peppers, hanging out at the Mill Hill in New Jersey, and an interesting run-in they had where Dale tells a drug dealer, “Go ahead, do your business… get a food truck!”

CBS #6 - Take This Waltz by Sarah Polley, Persis Shanker from Tomboy Tarts, James Van Der Beek "Cry Face"

This week we review "Take This Waltz" by Sarah Polley on our Movie Talk segment. We also have Persis Shanker from the Singaporean Tomboy Tarts podcast sit in and discuss "Take This Waltz", starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Podemski and Diana D'Aquila

"Take This Waltz" by Sarah Polley

Is "Take This Waltz" too girly for the Tomboys? What is it about this film that girls do not like? Sexy Sarah and Persis from Tomboy Tarts both really disliked "Take This Waltz." Let us know what you thought of this movie on Twitter @chrisbrakeshow!

Go here to listen to this week's podcast:

Or go here to download this week's podcast:

Persis also explains what it means to be a Tomboy, and Sexy Sarah tells a story about growing up as a Tomboy, and her parents thinking she was a lesbian when she was in 6th grade, all because she was dressing and acting like a Tomboy! So if you're worried about your daughter being a lesbian, maybe you should consider that she's just a Tomboy.

Chris and Sarah have no apologizes to give, but John has one: John apologizes for cutting off a lock of Sarah's hair. Chris also gets Sexy Sarah to go on record that if the Chris Brake Show gets 10,000 listeners, she will shave her head (or have John shave it for her)!

Sexy Sarah also wants you to give her ideas for a new hairdo. Please send your ideas for Sexy Sarah's new hairdo to us on Twitter @chrisbrakeshow!

This episode also features a heart-warming phone call from John's grandmother in which she asks that John please discontinue using his grandmother's toilet because he took a poo in it and now it is overflowing. Sorry about that, grandma!

This week's "5 Minutes in Capeside" segment features a re-enactment of the now infamous "Cry Face" episode of Dawson's Creek, now immortalized on the Internet for the James Van Der Beek "Cry Face" meme that you can see below:

James Van Der Beek "Cry Face" Meme
James Van Der Beek "Cry Face" Meme
This meme was taken from Season 3, Episode 23 of Dawson's Creek called "True Love," and this week we re-enact this truly moving and epic segment from the Dawson's Creek history books. Big shout out to all you Creek Freaks out there who are making our "5 Minutes in Capeside" segments such a huge success! If you have any ideas or episodes you would like us to feature on future "5 Minutes in Capeside" segments, let us know on Twitter @chrisbrakeshow!

We also must apologize to @MayaMorrison - she was supposed to come on the show and perform an original song of hers titled "Yellow Bedwetter," but because of technical difficulties we were unable to connect with her at the time we stated we would. So next week we'll hopefully be able to get Maya Morrison on the show and perform her classic original song "Yellow Bedwetter," and possibly one or two other original songs she has written.
